Prerequisites: Graduate Standing in Nursing or Permission of Instructor; NURS 760 and NURS 761

An overview of major concepts, theories, and evidence-based modalities related to psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacology treatment for mental disorders across the lifespan is the focus of this course. Additionally, emphasis is on the recognition and promotion of strategies and the development of skills used in the application of psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatment modalities for addressing mental health needs of infants to older adults.

2. Detailed Description of Course

An overview of major concepts, theories, and evidence-based modalities related to psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacology treatment for mental disorders across the lifespan is the focus of this course. Additionally, emphasis is on the recognition and promotion of strategies and the development of skills used in the application of psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatment modalities for addressing mental health needs of infants to older adults.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The online course explores and synthesizes theoretical conceptsofevidence-based psychotherapeutic and pharmacological modalities; promotes increasing demonstrated proficiency through assigned readings and online lectures, critique ofpsychotherapeutic treatments, and testing ofpsycho-pharmacodynamics and kinetics. Application of concepts are enhanced via student-directed discussions, case studies, individual presentations, self-reflective activities, and testing with faculty engagement toreinforce concepts.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

 1) Apply theories and evidence-based models for psychotherapeutic modalities to a variety of patient
        populations and disorders.
    2) Apply principles of best practices for using psychopharmacology to treat psychiatric disorders.
    3) Demonstrate knowledge of EB psychopharmacology treatments for patients with psychiatric
        disorders.
    4) Discuss ethical issues related to treatment of psychiatric disorders.
    5) Identify the neuropharmacological mechanisms, risks, benefits and outcomes of psychotropic
        drugs.

5. Assessment Measures

Participation in reading and onlinelearning, Discussion Board postings, Reflective Journal submissions, testing, Psychotherapy Presentation, Clinical Case Presentation and written assignment to demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatment practices.
