HLTH 420: CPR, First Aid, and AED Instructor

Prerequisites: HLTH 220 or HLTH 320 or permission of instructor

This course prepares students to become instructors in CPR, AED, and First Aid. Students will develop skills and instructional strategies to be successful instructors with a variety of clients. As part of this course, students will practice teaching skills with a current instructor.


Detailed Description of Course

1) Skill review and demonstrations
2) Knowledge review and demonstration
3) Instructional techniques for CPR, AED, and first aid
4) Observing, assessing, correcting skills
5) Importance of consistency in skill instruction
6)  Introduction to teaching for the American Red Cross, American Heart Assocaition, and/or the Emergency Care and Safety Institute
7) Specifics for teaching in a high school setting
8) Specific content for courses
9) Course organization and reporting
10) Equipment cleaning, sanitizing, and organization
11) Peer Teaching
12) Practice Teaching


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course information will be presented through a wide variety of teaching methods that may include, but are not limited to: Lecture, video, discussion, in-class activities, student demonstrations, online and in-class learning, online and in-class testing, student presentations, simulation exercises, peer teaching/assessment, practice teaching.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

1) Demonstrate all skills associated with the course.
2) Demonstrate knowledge associated with the course by scoring at least an 85% on a comprehensive content exam
3) Demonstrate knowledge of instructor materials by scoring at least an 85% on a comprehensive exam.
4) Describe and demonstrate manikin maintenance and sanitation.
5) Maintain health and safety of participants.
6) Demonstrate ways to teach class and organize practical sessions.
7) Evaluate and correct the skills of others (remediate) in the presence of a qualified isntructor.
8) Demonstrate course organization and reporting techniques
9) Prepare lesson plans for specific groups of students (9th graders, fitness staff, sport facility staff, etc.).
10) Demonstrate effective teaching skills for CPR, AED, First Aid with peers.
11) Demonstrate effective teaching to a class under supervision of a qualified instructor.
12) Prepare a budget for a CPR and First Aid program in the student's specialty area or one suggested by the course instructor.


Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include but are not limited to the following: Skill demonstrations, lesson plan, projects (budget and others), teaching demonstrations, peer teaching, attendance/participation/professional behavior, quizzes/tests, reflections.
