V. Course Description: 

Students will learn about research methodology and will be introduced to the unique characteristics of research in the emergency services profession. Students explore research problems in the clinical, systems, and education domains and will participate as a research assistant in a faculty led research project. Specific topics addressed in this course include research design, sampling, data collection, and analysis.

Note(s): Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning designated course.

VI. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Discuss the causes and implications of research deficiencies in the Emergency Services profession.
  2. Examine ethical principles associated with conducting human subjects research.
  3. Describe the most common designs, sampling techniques, and data collection methods utilized in Emergency Services research.
  4. Recognize appropriate considerations involved with designing and planning a proposed research study.
  5. Explore the role of a research assistant under the supervision of a faculty member.
