MUSC 303: Field Studies IV: Music Therapy Ensemble 

Prerequisites: MUSC 161/162, 164, 168, 206, 210, 166, 174, 186, music therapy major, upper-level standing, or permission of instructor

Credit Hours: (1) This course is repeatable

This performance-based class will count as one of the small, uncoached, ensembles within the music department core curriculum. Students will engage with a music therapy clinical population with the intention of forming the ensemble, choosing and arranging the music, conducting the ensemble, and performing with the ensemble. The type of music chosen will depend on the needs of the clients and the clinical setting. Students must acquire 12 client-contact hours within the semester. Field Studies IV will culminate with a music therapy qualifying exam, used to evaluate functional musicianship, basic interview skills, and comprehensive knowledge of the music therapy professional competencies.

 

Detailed Description of Course Content

  • Choosing a clinical population or clinical site for the implementation of the ensemble
  • Forming the ensemble and choosing the instrumentation.
  • Choosing music, arranging the music for the needs of the ensemble
  • Conducting the group and performing in and with the group as appropriate
  • Care and maintenance of musical equipment
  • Budgeting and material need for implementation of community performance groups
  • Planning, organizing, advertising, and facilitating a final performance  

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course may include the following instructional strategies: student musical performances, field experiences, student-generated materials, use of audio-visual materials and sound equipment, self-paced instruction, cooperative/group learning, demonstrations/performance

The following professional competencies as outlined by the American Music Therapy Association will be addressed in this course.

Introduced:

  • Adapt, arrange, transpose, and simplify music compositions for small vocal and non-symphonic instrumental ensembles.
  • Conduct small and large vocal and instrumental ensembles.

  • Compose songs with simple accompaniment.
  • Adapt, arrange, transpose, and simplify music compositions for small vocal and non-symphonic instrumental ensembles.
