HSCI 470: Infectious Diseases

Prerequisites: At least 3 credits in any BIOL course.

Catalog Description  

The fundamentals of infectious disease transmission, etiology, pathogenesis, management, and prevention are examined.  Several infectious agents that cause disease in the humans are identified and discussed.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This is an online, distance learning, course organized around student-centered learning modules, experiential activities, films/videos, lecture, case studies, guest speakers, and investigation of published literature. This is not a self-paced course, students are required to complete weekly course content modules. Students are required to attend synchronous sessions throughout the semester.

Student Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Describe the mechanisms for infectious disease transmission.

2. Explain the pathogenesis of some common infectious diseases in humans.

3. Assess strategies to prevent the transmission of common infectious diseases.

4. Examine the characteristics of several infectious diseases in humans.

Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include a range of strategies such as traditional assignments, group projects, student presentations, peer evaluations, discussion boards, quizzes, exams, papers, virtual trainings training, case-studies, and online survey tools.
