BIOLOGY

Overview

The study of biology provides the background and experience to critically address scientific problems, from global warming to pandemic disease to individualized medicine.

Why study biology?

  • You will become an independent scientist capable of asking and answering important biological questions.
  • You will develop the skills needed to succeed in graduate and professional programs and a broad variety of careers.
  • You can design your major to focus on your area of interest, from the tiniest biological molecule to the global environment.

How can you get started?

You will start your study of biology with either BIOL131: Ecology & Adaptation or BIOL132: Biology of Cells & Microorganisms. We’d also recommend BIOL160: Introductory Seminar in Biology as an orientation to the major and to get you thinking about how to make the most of your biology career at Radford.

Our department offers three B.S. degrees designated R and L in REAL: Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Medical Laboratory Science. Pathways in our minor in biology may satisfy R, L, R and L, or neither in REAL.

A flexible major that allows you to select any of the biology offerings and from a range of non-biology electives including physics, geospatial sciences, and other environmental courses. You can concentrate in pre-health biology, environmental biology, or pick your own courses.

A program of study aimed at preparing you for health-care professions or medical research. Coursework includes physics, calculus, and select health-related biology electives.
