RU Biology Alum Wins Teacher of the Year Award in North Carolina

Congratualations go out to 2018 Biology alumna Abby Malmborg - now Abby Bentley - for being awarded the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching Beginning Teacher of the Year.

As an undergraduate at RU, Abby excelled as a research student in Dr. Sara O'Brien's lab. She was awarded a SURF - Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship - in 2016 to investigate the impact of the agriculture pollutant trenbolone on fish development. After graduating from RU, Abby worked briefly at the Asheville Museum of Science as a science educator - finding unique ways to educate througout the pandemic. These communication skills helped her complete her Master's in Education at Western Carolina University. Abby was celebrated for her ability to relate science to real life and help students set high goals for themselves. More about Abby can be found here.
