Radford University Associate Professor of Marketing Jane Machin, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2019 Master Teacher Award, presented annually by the Marketing Management Association (MMA).

Machin was selected as the winner out of three finalists after she presented a summary of her innovative teaching methods, particularly in her Marketing 101 class, which typically has more than 120 students enrolled.

The award was announced during the organization’s 24th Fall Educator’s Conference, held Sept. 18-20 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Master Teacher Award recognizes and honors outstanding marketing educators who demonstrate an effective and innovative approach to teaching.

“I have to give credit to all my colleagues at Radford University and in the Davis College of Business and Economics who have encouraged and supported the innovative teaching methods in use in my courses,” Machin said.

Department of Marketing Chair James Lollar, Ph.D., said Machin “has all the qualities of the most outstanding professors. She invests significant time, effort and expertise to develop high quality, creative course content to engage and motivate students to learn. Her experiential teaching approach aligns particularly well with Radford University’s reputation of being student-centered.

The MMA is an academic association devoted to showcasing innovative marketing thought from academicians and practitioners. It holds two conferences each year, one in the spring and the other in the fall.

The spring conference meets in Chicago to provide its members with an opportunity to discuss scholarly research. The fall conference is held in various locations, such as Santa Fe, to share knowledge concerning teaching effectiveness and professional development ideas.

Prior to becoming an academic, Machin worked in international brand management with Unilever PLC. She is an energetic educator with experience teaching design thinking, advertising, creativity and innovation.

Machin has presented her research, which examines the intersection of decision making, stigma and consumer wellbeing, at top conferences in the field, such as the Association of Consumer Research and Marketing and Public Policy Conference, Her work has been published in top journals, including the “Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, Appetite” and “Marketing Education Review.”

“Dr. Machin’s teaching is informed by her remarkable academic research, previous work experience, and ongoing commitment to personal development,” Lollar said. “She is a remarkable role model for our faculty and students, and we are proud that Dr. Machin was recognized for the MMA Master Teacher Award—a well-deserved high honor.”

In addition to the MMA Master Teacher Award, Machin has been the recipient of numerous awards for her research and teaching, including the Thomas C. Kinnear Best Paper Award, the Cengage Pride/Ferrell Innovations in Teaching Competition and The Davis College of Business and Economics Outstanding Faculty Award.

“Here at Davis College, it is well-known what an excellent teacher Jane is and how dedicated she is to the learning of our students,” said Joy Bhadury, Ph,D., dean of Radford’s Davis College of Business and Economics. “This prestigious award from the Marketing Management Association is an external approbation of the same. I wish Jane a long and successful career here in the Davis College.”
