The CAS Test Proctoring Center works with faculty and students to provide approved testing accommodations while maintaining the academic standards of the course.
The Testing Coordinator follows the instructor's testing instructions when administering an assessment. Please provide complete and timely information about the exam, including any instructions or requirements you want CAS to follow.
If an Instructor Does Not Approve a Student's Test Proctoring Accommodation - CAS is Unable to Proctor
When a student submits a Test Proctoring Request, you will receive an email notification. You can review and approve the request through the Access CAS Faculty Portal in OneCampus.
If a student tells you they submitted a request but you did not receive an email, please check your Access CAS account.
Once the request has been processed, the student's request will display Approved under the test proctoring requests.
If you have questions about a Test Proctoring Request or need assistance with the process, contact the Center for Accessibility Services/Test Proctoring Center.
Please provide assessments to CAS at least two business days before the student's scheduled testing time. CAS may be unable to proctor an assessment without both an approved Test Proctoring Request and a copy of the exam.
You can submit an exam in any of the following ways:
Students may not deliver exams to the CAS front office.
If you are unable to provide an exam two business days in advance, contact the CAS Test Proctoring Center as soon as possible to discuss options.
CAS will return the completed assessment using the method selected on the approved Test Proctoring Request.
Students may not deliver completed exams from CAS to instructors
Extended testing time is calculated using the amount of time provided to the rest of the class.
Example: If the class has 50 minutes and a student has 50% extended time, the student receives 75 minutes to take the test.
Extended time is based on the actual testing time provided to the class. For example, if an assessment is designed to take two hours but the entire class is given four hours, the student's approved extended time is calculated from the standard two-hour assessment time, not the four-hour window.
Testing accommodations may apply to online assessments, including assessments administered through D2L. If an online assessment has a specific time limit, approved extended-time accommodations apply to that time limit. For example, if all students have 60 minutes to complete an online exam and a student has 50% extended time, the student receives 90 minutes. Extended time generally does not apply to take-home assessments that students may complete over several days without a defined testing period.
Students with a reduced-distraction testing accommodation may request to complete an online or in-person assessment through the CAS Test Proctoring Center.
Students using assistive technology at home are encouraged to contact CAS at least two-weeks (10 business days) before an exam if they need assistance learning or testing specific software.
If an online exam requires a lockdown browser, such as Respondus, TopHat, or ProctorU, students should contact CAS in advance to determine whether the software is compatible with their approved assistive technology.
If a compatibility concern arises, CAS will work with the instructor to identify an appropriate alternative.
Read&Write text-to-speech can be used with Respondus LockDown Browser. CAS can provide guidance to students using this combination. You are encouraged to share the Read and Write Respondus Lockdown Instructions with your student if they are using Read and Write software and Respondus.
If there are concerns about how a student's approved assistive technology will interact with Respondus, the Testing Coordinator will contact you.
Pop quizzes and assessments with little or no advance notice may create barriers for students who require testing accommodations.
If you plan to give pop quizzes and are concerned about providing an accommodation without advance notice, please contact CAS to discuss options for providing access.
Students are asked to submit Test Proctoring Requests at least five days before an assessment.
When a request is submitted less than five days before the assessment, Access CAS may show that no testing space is available.
If a student needs to request proctoring with less than five days' notice, they should contact the CAS Test Proctoring Center at castests@radford.edu or 540-831-6350.
Any rescheduling is at the instructor's discretion.
CAS will not reschedule an assessment without the instructor's explicit permission.
If you approve a rescheduled assessment, CAS will assist when space, time, and staffing are available. The student should submit a new Test Proctoring Request or contact the Testing Coordinator as soon as possible.
An instructor is not required to approve a rescheduled assessment because a student did not submit the original request on time.
CAS works with instructors and students to maintain the integrity of assessments while providing approved testing accommodations.
