ESHE 363: Seminar in Professional Fieldwork

Prerequisite: Junior Standing; minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

Credit Hours: (1)

Examines issues in Commercial Fitness/Sports Medicine. Provides information for resume, interviewing, job search skills and contracts.

Note(s): This course is required for admittance to ESHE 463. Pass/Fail.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

It is intended that ESHE 363 will serve the student and program in four ways:

1) To introduce the student to current issues affecting the student's entry into the fields of Commercial Fitness/Sports Medicine.
2) To teach techniques which will assist prospective graduates in locating, interviewing for and receiving professional positions.
3) To assist the student in recognizing specific job interest and defining career goals.
4) To assist the student in selecting an intern position in Commercial Fitness/Sports Medicine and to partially screen prospective interns through a recommendation for admittance to the fieldwork program.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

While the primary methods for relaying information will be lecture and discussion, practical and simulated experiences will be employed when appropriate. Role playing, use of video tape, discussion, questioning, and writing provide for the bulk of information.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Specific goals and objectives include:

1) The student shall demonstrate knowledge of current issues affecting the development of an employment potential in commercial fitness/sports medicine.
2) The student shall demonstrate knowledge of personal career goals and employment requirements.
3) The student shall demonstrate knowledge of the techniques of conducting a successful job search.
4) The student shall demonstrate knowledge of the techniques for writing job search letters including cover and follow up letters.
5) The student shall demonstrate knowledge of the procedures required for developing a professional resume.
6) The student shall demonstrate knowledge of the procedures required for identifying and obtaining a fieldwork position.
7) The student shall demonstrate knowledge of the concept of being a professional in the field of commercial fitness/sports medicine.

 

Assessment Measures

Evaluation techniques include: (1) two written tests, (2) topical papers and completed fieldwork application and contract (3) job performance demonstration and presentations.
