Dr. Jon Poole
Jon Poole is a Professor in the Health and Human Performance Department. He taught previously at both the University of Utah and Virginia Tech.
Jon serves as the Coordinator for the K-12 Physical and Health Education (PHED) Program teaching elementary school and secondary school teaching methods courses and supervising student teachers completing internship teaching responsibilities in physical and health education. The PHED Program at Radford promotes their motto, “Leaning to Move; Moving to Learn” by advocating more integrated teaching approaches in physical activity settings. As a believer that the physical education environment is a key player in the development of educational skills such as reading, writing, and problem-solving, among others, Jon has help fashion the PHED program to prepare graduates to work closely with classroom teachers to create programs which focus on child-centered school-wide literacy.
Jon has long been an advocate for a more coordinated approach to teaching physical education and health education in K-12 schools with his professional interests including promoting physically active and healthy living for K-12 students, health-related fitness education, and teaching lifetime sports and physical activities. He regularly consults with schools and school districts interested in health-related fitness education. Jon has contributed dozens of articles and presentations at regional and national conferences over the past 20 years and currently serves as one of the contributors to the nationally known PELinks4U website (www.pelinks4u.org).
Jon has been a recipient of a University Service Learning Educator Award (Virginia Tech, 1997), the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance College Physical Educator of the Year Award (1999), and the College of Education and Human Development Outstanding Teaching Award (Radford University, 2007).
Closer to home, Jon is married to Kathleen Poole, an Associate Professor also in the Department of Exercise, Sport, and Health Education at Radford University. Professionally, Jon and Kathleen have served as fitness and wellness consultants to professional football officials in the National Football League (NFL) since 1996. Their work with the NFL Officials has resulted in several presentations and publications (including two chapters in the book, Successful Sports Officiating, Human Kinetics, 2011) examining the physiological demands associated with officiating.
Jon and Kathleen have two boys, Kenny and Kyle, with whom they enjoy a wide variety of physical activities including playing tennis, golfing, running, and bicycling among other activities.
