Jennie Ruhland, a Radford Department of Theatre and Cinema alumnus, has been professionally designing costumes for over 20 years. She received her MFA in Drama: Costume Design and Construction from the University of Virginia and previously taught and designed costumes for 13 years at Roanoke College before coming back home to Radford University in 2019. She has designed for Heritage Repertory Theatre, Mill Mountain Theatre, Roanoke Children’s Theatre, Opera Roanoke, La Musica Lirica, Operafestival di Roma, Studio Roanoke, UVA, Hollins University, and Roanoke College. Jenni has been nominated for the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival Excellence in a Faculty Costume Design for Theatre Roanoke College’s production of Our Town, and won first place in KCACTF’s 12-minute sketches competition. Her costume design for UVA’s The Way of the World, The Cherry Orchard, and The Ives Have It earned her Barbizon Costume Design nominations. Internationally, Jennie has traveled all over Italy designing and costume managing operas for La Musica Lirica and Operafestival di Roma, and has co-taught intensive learning classes where she and another professor took students to England to study plays in London and Stratford-Upon-Avon. Being a member of USITT has also allowed her to study costumes through a costume study tour with Mandy Barrington with Arts University, Bournemouth, in the UK.

When not teaching all things costumes, Jennie loves spending time with her husband James and her two sons, Mason and Calvin.
