From the series Careers I'll Never Have by Bill Wightman
Beyond the Tartan: Bill Wightman
Jan. 26 – March 6
Opening Reception on Jan. 26 at 5 p.m.
One of these works sold at an art auction for $300. I have to admit that I was disappointed!
Although many of the works in Bill Wightman's exhibition are intentionally playful, often behind or beyond this sense of play lie other realms of exploration. For example, in the body of work entitled “Careers I’ll Never Have," the images of Wightman as a professional working in a variety of settings explore his self-realized limitations, whether they be aptitude, abilities, resources, etc. The “faked” scenes also intend to address our own instances of fakery when convincing others of our expertise, skills, etc.

Paul Frets in his studio.
Paul Frets & Charlie Brouwer: Deep Space & Domestic Scenes
June 2 – July 28
Reception on July 16 at 5 p.m.
An exhibition of emeritus art professors Paul Frets and Charlie Brouwer features paintings by Frets, and drawings and sculpture by Brouwer.
Frets’ paintings were created in the early eighties. His paintings began by working to synthesize the inherent contradictions between gestural and color field painting. This struggle is represented in his paintings in this exhibition. His goal was equilibrium energy and light.
For Brouwer, houses or homes often appear in his work and there are many references to them in the sculptures and drawings he chose for this exhibit. He says, “The meaning of home is complicated, and it shifts and changes as our lives unfold. Our place at any point can be described in terms of distance from home – sometimes the distance is in miles or in time, but home can also be near or far emotionally or spiritually.”
Exhibit hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until June 18. The gallery will be closed on June 15 and then June 19-29. It will reopen on June 30 through July 28, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
