Graduate Student Peyton Mills shares her experience while attending the International Public Relations Research Conference in Orlando, Florida.

“My undergraduate journey in the School of Communication was cut short in 2020 due to the pandemic. I was honored to have the opportunity to continue my education by earning a master’s degree in Strategic Communication. When I entered the program, I was unclear about what career I wanted to pursue after Radford. The STARS grant allowed me to go to the International Public Relations Research Conference, where I got a glimpse into other areas of the field."

"During my time in Orlando, Florida, I learned about new research topics that I had always found interesting but had never known how to study them. The topics varied from the public’s opinion of a company after their response to a hot topic, to the amount of credibility that different social media influencers have. I also got to meet people to discuss job opportunities and doctoral programs. Our research focused on organizational legitimacy and the public’s perception of 15 different companies. I have always been hesitant to apply for funding, but I am thankful I did. The STARS grant paid for my registration, flight, and hotel room. Without the STARS funding, this conference would’ve been out of reach, and I would have missed out on this opportunity.”

Dr. John Brummette presented the research with Peyton, Mercedes Loescher, who is also a student in our Strategic Communication program and alum Hilary Fussell-Sisco, '05. Dr. Lynn Zoch was also involved in the research project, but was unable to attend the conference.

The CHBS STARS fund provides financial support for student travel to short-term, domestic experiential learning opportunities. Through the generous support of our alumni and friends, STARS assists students with funding for expenses such as travel, registration, and lodging so they can explore the world and opportunities beyond southwestern Virginia.
