NURS 380: Holistic Nursing Practice

Prerequisites: Admission into the RN-BSN program and NURS 302

This course fosters an environment for the nursing student to implement Evidence-Based Practice, nursing theory, and holistic core values/principles into their professional practice.


Detailed Description of Course

The objectives and content of this RN-BSN course are derived from the School of Nursing's philosophy and conceptual framework, and facilitate achievement of the School's program objectives as well as the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education (AACN). Additionally, the major topics and skills covered in this course represent content that is requisite for a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Current research and advancement in theory and clinical practice also determine content.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course fosters an environment for the nursing student to implement Evidence-Based Practice, nursing theory, and holistic core values/principles into their professional practice. Students will apply their current knowledge and skills, while building new ones, to implement behavioral change strategies, fulfill nurse coaching activities, and integrate holism into their care delivery. Florence Nightingale advocated for patient care that was unified, health/wellness focuses and collaborative in delivery which is the desired practice change component of this course. Nurses completing this course will be equipped with the integral holistic care education needed to take the National Board Certification Examination for Holistic Nursing Practice.


Student Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1) Describe the philosophical, theoretical, and historical foundations of integrative nursing practice
2) Identify the scope and standards of holistic nursing practice
3) Analyze current trends in holistic nursing practice
4) Discuss the connection between spirituality and health
5) Outline the holistic caring process
6) Review the physiological connection between the body and mind and compare and contrast mind-body practices for holistic health
7) Model holistic health communication
8) Integrate strategies to promote cultural diversity and holistic health into nursing practice
9) Connect the holistic nursing role to leadership, education, and research activities
10) Incorporate self-care strategies into personal health practices as well as educate clients about self-care strategies
11) Describe the role of holistic health in advanced practice nursing


Assessment Measures

Graded assessment measures may include but are not limited to online quizzes, tests, APA scholarly written paper, written assignments and discussion board participation.
