MUSC 320: Group Supervision and Internship Preparation

Prerequisites: MUSC 163, a declared major of music therapy, or permission of instructor

Credit Hours: (1)

This course will support students during their practicum experience. Group supervision models will be implemented to encourage students to learn from one another, allow students to practice various group supervision strategies and support one another as they approach the time to start applying for music therapy internships. Students will receive guidance on preparing for and applying for the required internship experience.

  • Overview of group supervision models
  • Experiential learning activities that allow students to gain insights about their clinical work
  • Implementing integral thinking into supervision models
  • Focus on verbal techniques
  • Review AMTA National Roster Guidelines for music therapy internships
  • Review and create documents to be used when applying for internships
     
 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course may include the following instructional strategies: experientials, student development of materials, cooperative/group learning, oral and musical communication activities, and role-playing/simulation, field-experiences.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

The following professional competencies as outlined by the American Music Therapy Association will be addressed in this course. At the conclusion of the semester students will possess emphasized knowledge across the following areas as assessed through a variety of

measures:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of accepted methods of major therapeutic approaches
  • Recognize the impact of one's own feelings, attitudes, and actions on the client and the therapy process
  • Demonstrate an understanding of philosophical, psychological, physiological, and sociological basis of music as therapy
  • Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with clients and team members that are appropriate and conducive to therapy
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the dynamics and processes of a therapist-client relationship
  • Demonstrate awareness of the influence of race, ethnicity, language, religion, marital status, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, ability, socioeconomic status, or political affiliation on the therapeutic process
  • Use oneself effectively in the therapist role in both individual and group therapy, e.g., appropriate self-disclosure, authenticity, empathy, etc. toward affecting desired therapeutic outcomes
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the dynamics and processes of therapy groups
  • Recognize, interpret, and respond appropriately to significant events in music therapy sessions as they occur
  • Provide feedback on, reflect, rephrase, and translate the client's communications
  • Promote a sense of group cohesiveness and/or a feeling of group membership
  • Recognize significant changes and patterns in the client's response to therapy
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to situations in which there are clear and present dangers to the client and/or others
  • Interpret and adhere to the AMTA Code of Ethics
  • Accept criticism/feedback with willingness and follow through in a productive manner.
  • Resolve conflicts in a positive and constructive manner

 Assessment Measures

Clinical paperwork that is typical in a variety of settings to capture client data and report on client progress, music playing experiences, reflections on readings and quizzes on readings, video reflections of clinical settings, internship application materials such as a resume, cover-letter, videos of music skills or mock therapy sessions.
