MUSC 158: Guitar I for Musitc Therapy Students
Prerequisites: Music Therapy Major or permission of instructor.
Credit Hours: (1)
Beginning through intermediate guitar techniques intended for students in the music therapy program.
Detailed Description of Course Content
- Introduction to parts of the guitar, tuning, replacing strings, guitar care and maintenance
- Health and safety of the musician in relation to playing the guitar
- Functional understanding of the fretboard, string names and placement, how to play basic melodies as found in traditional, folk, and/or popular songs
- Beginning finger picking and strumming patterns
- Basic chord positions in major and minor keys
- Introduction to simple chord extensions
- How to read traditional notation and chord symbols as found on a lead sheet or in a fakebook
- Transposition
- An introduction to barre chords both major and minor forms.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This lab course may include the following instructional strategies: lecture, cooperative/group learning, demonstrations, music playing opportunities and playing/performing exams.
