I. Course Title: Pianist as Collaborator I

III. Credit Hours: 1 credit

IV. Prerequisites: First year piano major or instructor permission

V. Course Description:

This course is a two-semester sequence (1 credit each semester) designed to introduce collaborative concepts to first year piano majors and develop basic skills involved in vocal and instrumental collaboration at the keyboard, including: proper balance of the various components within a musical texture, matching articulations, breathing, voicing, pedaling, rehearsal and preparation techniques, development of sight reading and listening skills, and general collaborative experience.

This course will prepare and support piano majors for subsequent participation in major ensembles, vocal and instrumental studio lessons, music department performances, and a wide variety of collaborative capacities. 

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

This course will give first year piano majors the opportunity to study the many intricacies of piano collaboration in a class/lecture setting before setting out to perform collaboratively in ensembles beginning in their second year.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

The course will include both lecture and masterclass settings.

Lectures will focus on:

  1. Technical, musical, and practical aspects of collaboration across different instruments and voice types
  2. Introducing students to the various sound production characteristics and mechanisms of different instruments and voice types
  3. Exposing students to important repertoire written for solo instrument/voice and piano
  4. Specific, applicable rehearsal and performance techniques students can carry with them throughout their education and career

Masterclasses will focus on:

  1. Rehearsal and performance techniques tailored to specific student, ensemble, and repertoire selection
  2. Applicable strategies for successful collaboration and performance in a variety of settings
  3. Examination and discussion of different pieces, composers, and ensembles as explored in class

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Students will acquire a broad exposure and understanding of the role of the keyboard in various ensembles with other instruments and vocalists, thus preparing them for performance and participation in any variety of collaborative setting.

Upon successful completion of the two-semester sequence, students will be well equipped to perform with standard instrument and voice soloists in ensemble.

Students will be assessed based on:

  1. Individual growth and development
  2. Preparation for weekly performance exercises
  3. Comprehension of material within coaching sessions
