IV. Prerequisites:  Sophomore standing.

V. Course Description: 

The course will cover the fundamentals of data transmission over computer networks.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.  Students that have earned credit for ITEC 350 cannot subsequently earn credit for ITEC 205.  Students may not take ITEC 205 and ITEC 350 concurrently.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

This course will be taught in lecture format.  

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  1. Explain what various networking hardware components do and the advantages/disadvantages of different network topologies.
  2. Explain how domain names work.
  3. Demonstrate the use of command-tools to troubleshoot network address problems.
  4. Explain the purpose and properties of routing using IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.
  5. Explain basic data transmission concepts (including but not limited to: data modulation, bandwidth, baseband and broadband)
  6. Explain methods for remotely connecting to a network.
  7. Explain virtualization and its use in a network.
  8. Explain network security risks and how to limit network vulnerabilities.
  9. Students will be able to reflect on how the skills they learn in this class will apply to professional roles.

Assessments, which may include in-class exams, presentations, homework assignments, projects, labs, and quizzes will be used to measure each student’s performance.
