CHEM 301:302. Organic Chemistry
Three hours lecture; three hours laboratory (4).

Prerequisite: CHEM 102

Study of the physical and chemical properties of organic compounds.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Nomenclature, preparation, and reactions of organic compounds are the major focus of this course.

The following topics are covered:

1. Basic Structures and Properties
2. Methane: Energy of Activation and Transition State
3. Alkanes, Including Free Radical Substitution
4. Stereoisomers
5. Alkyl Halides, Including Nucleophilic Aliphatic Substitution Mechanisms
6. Alkenes, Including elimination, electrophilic, and free-radical addition mechanisms
7. Conjugation and Resonance of Dienes
8. Alkynes
9. Alicyclic Hydrocarbons
10. Benzene

Mechanisms and synthetic routes are discussed. The areas of organic chemistry discussed are those topics that are covered in any basic organic chemistry course.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Weekly quizzes and occasionally homeworks are given to ensure that the student keeps up with the material being covered. A thorough understanding of the material being discussed in class is necessary for students to do well on quizzes and tests.

In the weekly laboratory period, students work in groups of two. The students prepare organic compounds from other compounds demonstrating the reactions that are discussed in class. Students are expected to do percent yield calculations on all of the products that are synthesized. Some products are analyzed by gas chromatography, fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Other experiments involve the isolation of a compound from a natural product.

Each student is required to submit, for a grade, a notebook containing the experimental procedure and results. The notebook contains the constants, equations, mechanisms, procedures, observations, percent yields, and all other applicable calculations. The students are expected to interpret any of the spectra that is done in the lab.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Student outcomes:

1. To obtain a good background in the basic principles of organic chemistry in order to pass the course.
2. To be able to perform many basic laboratory procedures using a variety of chemicals, equipment, and glassware.

 

Assessment Measures

1. Laboratory notebook -- the notebook is a compilation of the data collected in the laboratory. It includes procedures, observations, calculations, and the interpretation of spectra.
2. Homework, weekly quizzes, three to four tests, and final -- the homework, weekly quizzes, the tests, and final will be the application and the retention of the lecture material.
