HLTH 325: Diversity of Health in the United States

Prerequisite: HLTH 111, HLTH 200, NUTR 214, or NURS 111; minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

Credit Hours: (3)

Designed to inform students of diversity issues, health-related disparities, and controversies related to the health of racial, ethnic, and other groups of the population in the United States. This course may be used to meet requirements for the minor in Women’s Studies.


Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course provides students with an understanding of health issues for minority and other populations in the United States. A professional health educator must understand diversity in health and health-related disparities among different groups of the population. This course will provide insight into how cultures view health, how they use health resources, and how they are affected differently by diseases and disabilities than other groups.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students shall gain knowledge through lecture and group discussion.


Goals and Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, students shall be able to:

* Describe the importance of understanding cultural diversity for promotion of health.
* Examine the health of Latino populations, and prioritize health concerns for this group of the population.
* Examine the health of African American populations, and prioritize health concerns for this group of the population.
* Examine the health of American Indian and Alaskan Native populations, and prioritize health concerns for this group of the population.
* Examine the health of Pacific Islander populations, and prioritize health concerns for this group of the population.
* Examine the health of Asian populations, and prioritize health concerns for this group of the population.
* Examine the health of rural and urban populations, and prioritize health concerns for these groups of the population.
