CS 101

CS 101: Computational Thinking

Credit Hours: (3)

CS 101 is designed to prepare students for CS 120 by introducing real world problems (AI, Cybersecurity, Gaming, etc…), problem solving strategies, and the tools used in CS 120.  Students who have credit for CS 120 may not take CS 101.  CS 101 may only be attempted twice.

 

Content

1. Problem solving strategies (problem decomposition, deduction, simplification, abstraction)
2. Technical vocabulary and communication
3. Developing algorithmic solutions for computers
4. Exploring computer programs and their environment

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will be exposed to common problems in the field.  They will learn common strategies to solve these problems.  Students will be introduced to a programming language and how it can solve problems.  Students will explore pre-existing programs to solve problems.

Students who complete this course will be able to:

1. Apply computational thinking to solve problems
2. Identify need for algorithms to define precise solutions
3. Analyze and develop algorithms that solve problems
4. Explore a running computer program
5. Evaluate solutions for correctness analytically
6. Understand how to communicate solutions to complex problems

 

Assessment Measures

A significant component of the assessment must measure each individual student’s mastery of the conceptual and applied knowledge and skills described in the course objectives. Evaluations may include, but are not limited to: assignments, projects, presentations, quizzes, and examinations.
