Prerequisites: ARTS 304 Sculpture II or permission of instructor.

Advanced study of sculptural forms, concepts, techniques and media.

Emphasis is placed on personal voice, critical thinking, and advanced technical execution across traditional and contemporary sculptural media.

Detailed Description of Course

Sculpture III is an advanced studio course emphasizing independent, self-directed creative practice and professional-level artistic development. Students will develop a cohesive body of work that demonstrates both conceptual sophistication and technical mastery, employing a wide range of traditional and contemporary sculptural materials and methods.

Major Units and Subtopics:

  1. Independent Studio Practice
    1. Development of a personal artistic direction
    2. Time management, managing work processes and refining projects step-by-step
    3. Experimentation with diverse materials and techniques
  2. Advanced Sculptural Techniques
    1. Traditional and contemporary methods, including woodwork, mixed media, installation and performance.
    2. Integration of complex construction methods, surface treatments, and finishing techniques
  3. Conceptual Research & Critical Inquiry
    1. Investigation of historical and contemporary sculptural practices
    2. Visual research through sketches and small-scale models (maquettes)
    3. Clear articulation of conceptual intent through writing and discussion
  4. Critique & Professional Presentation
    1. Participation in group and individual critiques focusing on critical vocabulary and peer feedback
    2. Preparation for exhibition and professional presentation, including documentation, display/installation
    3. Reflection on artistic process, material choices, and viewer engagement

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Sculpture III combines a variety of instructional strategies to foster advanced artistic development. Weekly lectures introduce complex sculptural concepts and techniques, complemented by demonstrations of both traditional and contemporary fabrication methods. Students engage in group and individual critiques to develop critical thinking and effectively articulate their ideas. Independent studio practice is emphasized, enabling students to manage their own projects with guidance from the instructor.

Assigned readings of art historical texts, artist statements/interviews, and critical essays provide essential context and enrich conceptual understanding. Group discussions based on these readings enhance critical inquiry skills and expand students’ artistic vocabulary. Student presentations on research findings and project progress foster articulation, reflection, and iterative improvement of their work. Additionally, guest lectures by practicing artists and professionals broaden students’ understanding of contemporary sculptural practices.

  2. To demonstrate technical proficiency in a range of sculptural methods, including traditional and/or contemporary fabrication.
  3. To apply critical thinking and research skills to inform and support the development of personal artistic direction.
  4. To engage in rigorous critique, articulating their visual ideas and conceptual concerns using appropriate vocabulary and contextual understanding.
  5. To investigate and integrate historical and contemporary sculptural practices to develop their own work within a broader art context.
  6. To establish and maintain studio practices that include effective time management, experimentation, and iterative development of ideas and technical skills.
  7. To prepare and present finished works in a professional manner suitable for exhibition and/or portfolio.


Sculpture III: Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate highly developed knowledge and skills in the use of tools, techniques, and processes sufficient to produce a sophisticated body of work through specific investigation and research.
  2. Demonstrate advance skilled solutions to aesthetic and design problems, and analyze, synthesize, and apply the important connection between content and form as it relates to three-dimensional practices.
  3. Critically compare and apply advance knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of various traditional and non-traditional materials and fabrication techniques.
  4. Analyze, synthesize and apply information from multiple sources related to contemporary and historical sculptural practices in order to develop their personal artistic vision.
  5. Apply and communicate an advance level functional knowledge of visual and technical language applicable to the formal and conceptual aspects of an artwork in writing and class discussion.
  6. Employ professional practices, including written statements, documentation, installation, and presentation of the work.
  7. Work independently to manage time, resources, and studio workflow, showing initiative and sustained engagement with their creative process.
