Internship Program

Selected students in Radford University's Government Relations Internship Program gain firsthand experience in state and local government while building professional skills, expanding their networks, and exploring careers in public service. Interns spend the first part of the spring semester working alongside Southwest Virginia legislators and their staff during the Virginia General Assembly session in Richmond. They then return to campus to continue their internship in a local government setting. Throughout the experience, students develop leadership and communication skills, strengthen their understanding of public policy, and gain an insider's perspective on how government works at both the state and local levels. The program is coordinated and supervised by the Assistant Vice President for Government Relations and Strategic Initiatives.

The Government Relations office will provide complimentary housing in Richmond, a stipend to offset internship expenses in Richmond, and students can earn up to 12 academic credits. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Whether your interests are in business, education, healthcare, communication, public policy, technology, or the arts, this internship offers valuable professional experience and career exploration opportunities.

Program Highlights

• Work 25-30 hours per week in legislative and local government offices.
• Receive complimentary housing in downtown Richmond during the General Assembly session.
• Earn a stipend to help offset living expenses.
• Receive up to 12 academic credit hours.
• Build real-world experience in public policy, government operations, and community engagement.
• Network with elected officials, government leaders, and policy professionals.

Students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor early in the application process to discuss how internship credits may apply toward degree requirements and spring semester course planning.

Two Experiences. One Transformative Semester.

The internship consists of two phases:

State Government Experience, January-February 2027

Interns begin the semester in Richmond during the Virginia General Assembly session, where they work directly in legislative offices and experience the policymaking process firsthand. Living and working alongside government leaders provides unparalleled exposure to state government, public policy, and professional networking opportunities.

Responsibilities may include:

• Legislative and policy research
• Bill tracking and analysis
• Monitoring committee and floor sessions
• Constituent correspondence
• Communications and social media support
• Special projects as assigned

Local Government Experience,  March-April 2027

After the General Assembly adjourns, interns return to campus and continue their experience in local government. This phase allows students to see how public policy is implemented at the community level while contributing to projects that directly impact citizens and local organizations.

Responsibilities may include:

• Research and analysis projects
• Event planning and community engagement activities
• Attending government meetings
• Drafting presentations, reports, and communications
• Supporting public service initiatives and special projects

Professional Development

Professional growth is woven throughout the internship experience. Students participate in networking events, leadership development opportunities, career-readiness workshops, and experiential learning activities designed to strengthen communication, collaboration, and professional confidence.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

• Be a currently enrolled full-time sophomore, junior or senior at Radford University.
• Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
• Be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
• Be available to reside in Richmond, Virginia, Monday through Friday from January 10-February 26, 2027.
• Complete a criminal history check and employment eligibility verification if selected.

Selection Process and Timeline

• Application Deadline: October 5, 2026
• Application Review and Interviews: October 2026
• Selection Notifications: Late October 2026
• Orientation Sessions: November-December 2026
• Internship Begins: January 2027

Applications will be reviewed by the Government Relations Internship Selection Committee. Selected applicants will be invited to interview in October.
