At Radford University, the Office of Emergency Management uses an all-hazards approach to help create a safe, secure, and resilient campus. We focus on preparing for, responding to, recovering from, and mitigating the impact of emergencies, supporting the University’s mission of academic excellence, research, and community service.

Our goal is to build a culture of preparedness across campus by strengthening personal readiness, departmental planning, and overall university resilience.

Radford University is now officially recognized as a StormReady Supporter by the National Weather Service (NWS).

 This recognition shows that the University has taken important steps to strengthen emergency preparedness and first responder coordination for natural disasters. The StormReady program helps communities get ready for all types of severe weather through local planning, education, and awareness. By being part of this program, Radford is better prepared to keep our campus community safe during extreme weather events.

What does it take to become a StormReady Supporter?

To earn this recognition, Radford University had to meet several key safety and preparedness standards, including:

• Maintaining a 24/7 emergency communications center
• Receiving weather alerts from multiple trusted sources (like NOAA radios, TV, and text alerts)
• Actively monitoring weather conditions in real time
• Being able to quickly share weather warnings with the campus community
• Hosting safety talks and weather awareness events
• Running at least one shelter-in-place drill each year
• Regularly connecting with the National Weather Service (NWS) for planning and review
• Including weather emergencies in the University’s overall emergency plan
• Ensuring key staff are trained in emergency response and command systems

By meeting these requirements, Radford is better prepared to keep our community informed and safe, no matter what the weather brings.
