Communication Sciences and Disorders student Grace Burke spent many hours immersed in theatre and the arts, which she said taught her how to better communicate her thoughts and feelings — a distinct advantage over many of her peers that endured the COVID pandemic. Those hours, Burke said, paid off by giving her insight into what she wanted to do with her professional life as a speech therapist.

On Saturday, October 20, 2023 alumni joined COSD faculty members, Corey Cassidy and Terri Shelor (BS ‘93; MS ’95), to celebrate Homecoming Weekend and the 50^th Anniversary of the inaugural SLP graduating class!

About 40 local children participated across five clinical on-campus programs, working with graduate students to develop and enhance their communication and literacy skills. The day camp was held over four weeks in June. 

Virtual sessions added a new opportunity for distance-learning students to participate in the eighth annual Interprofessional Symposium on April 13 organized by Waldron College of Health and Human Services. Students and faculty gathered in Heth Hall for the in-person sessions and to view the virtual presentations.

As part of her duties as a speech-language pathologist at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, Jessica Cartwright Wisman ’08, M.A. ’10, consults with other healthcare professionals caring for hospitalized adults. Recently, her actions helped save a life which resulted in her being named a Carilion Clinic Healthcare Hero.

The Radford University Brain Injury Center (RUBI) recently visited the Glencoe Museum in Radford, Virginia. Each month speech language pathology graduate clinicians plan and organize an outing with supervision and support from the RUBI directors. The outings aim to increase socialization and interaction of the group members with our community.

Radford University has named Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Waldron College of Health and Human Services Associate Dean Corey Herd Cassidy, Ph.D. as Executive Director of the newly-created Academic Success Center effective June 1, 2020.

Radford University’s Department of Communications Sciences and Disorders concluded its three-week RiteCare Clinics summer program with a luncheon July 2. 

In the Preschool Language Lab, music therapy students work alongside communication sciences and disorders graduate students to assist young children develop verbal communication skills.

For the 23rd consecutive year, Radford University will host a series of RiteCare© camps this summer to enhance children's literacy and language skills.

To help patients recover from swallowing disorders, aspiring speech language pathologists in the Radford University Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders now have access to the latest therapy technology.

The Radford University Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (COSD) was featured at the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV) annual conference.

Radford University announced on Jan. 18 plans for a potential merger with the Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke. The announcement was covered by media outlets across Virginia.

A wounded warrior and his family were the focus of almost 200 students and faculty during the two sessions of the Waldron College of Health and Human Services’ (WCHHS) Interprofessional Education and Practice Symposium on Nov. 3.

Three children will trick or treat in style thanks to teams of graduate students from the Radford University Doctor of Physical Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders Departments.
