Winter Commencement 2023: Grace Burke, Waldron College of Health and Human Services »

Communication Sciences and Disorders student Grace Burke spent many hours immersed in theatre and the arts, which she said taught her how to better communicate her thoughts and feelings — a distinct advantage over many of her peers that endured the COVID pandemic. Those hours, Burke said, paid off by giving her insight into what she wanted to do with her professional life as a speech therapist.

About 40 local children participated across five clinical on-campus programs, working with graduate students to develop and enhance their communication and literacy skills. The day camp was held over four weeks in June.

As part of her duties as a speech-language pathologist at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, Jessica Cartwright Wisman ’08, M.A. ’10, consults with other healthcare professionals caring for hospitalized adults. Recently, her actions helped save a life which resulted in her being named a Carilion Clinic Healthcare Hero.

The Radford University Brain Injury Center (RUBI) recently visited the Glencoe Museum in Radford, Virginia. Each month speech language pathology graduate clinicians plan and organize an outing with supervision and support from the RUBI directors. The outings aim to increase socialization and interaction of the group members with our community.
