Quiz Bowl seeking quick-thinking, smart students to represent Radford
The Honors College will host the Radford University Quiz Bowl – the varsity sport of the mind – in preparation for assembling a team to represent Radford at the annual Big South Conference Quiz Bowl.
The 2018 Radford Quiz Bowl Tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 in Heth 43. The preliminary rounds will take place from 9 a.m. until noon and the final rounds will be from 1-2:30 p.m.
“The Quiz Bowl is a fun and intense way to represent Radford,” said Honors College Director Niels Christensen. “From a day of friendly, but fierce, competition that plumbs the campus community’s deep knowledge of literature, history, geography, government, the sciences, math, art, popular culture and sports, we hope to find quick-thinking students with a diverse knowledge base who can help Radford win a championship.”
The Radford Quiz Bowl is a team version of the popular television show "Jeopardy" and teams compete for cash prizes.
Registration is underway and is open to any Radford University undergraduate student. Registration remains open until the tournament is full, or through Monday, Sep. 24. For more information, call the Honors College at 831-6125 or visit the Quiz Bowl website.
Players can sign-up as an individual, a partial team of two or three players or a full team of four or five players. For the event, single players and partial teams will be combined to create complete teams and 12 teams will fill out the tournament. After that, interested teams and players will be placed on a wait-list.
The day-long event is a preliminary for the Big South Conference’s team based-academic tournament – the Big South Quiz Bowl, which pits student teams in a series of timed head-to-head challenges for a conference championship. The top ten individual scorers at the Radford Quiz Bowl will be invited to try out for the five-person team that will represent Radford at the conference event.
The 2019 Big South Quiz Bowl is set for January 16-17, 2019 at High Point University. Four-time defending champion Liberty will not compete, so a new Big South Quiz Bowl champion will be crowned.
