Class of 2018, Media Studies
Emily Preston, who graduated in December 2018, found friends and opportunity when she transferred to Radford University from Virginia Western Community College.
Radford’s small class size and scenic campus caught the Baltimore, Maryland native’s eye.
“When I first started looking at colleges I thought I wanted to go to a big school, but once I got here I was so grateful that I didn’t pick anywhere bigger,” Preston said.
“In a major as hands-on as advertising, having professors who care and want to teach is so important and I found that here,” Preston explained. “I even have one or two I know I’ll be able to keep in contact with as mentors after I leave.”
However, Preston’s favorite part of attending Radford has been the memories made with friends she found after transferring to the university.
“Coming in as a transfer was intimidating for sure, so I was nervous about finding ways to meet people,” Preston said. “I joined my sorority and really found a niche of people that I’ll be friends with for my whole life.”
After graduation, Preston plans to move to Tennessee for her dream job as a traveling sales representative. She will miss the friends and mentors she has made at Radford but plans to stay in touch with them throughout her future career.
“For the last three and a half years of my life, this place has been home. It’s going to be hard making that adjustment to a new place with new people after finding some of my very best friends here,” Preston said. “I don’t think it’s quite hit me yet how different things will be, but that’s going to be the hardest part.”
