Growing up with a mother who was a teacher, Alexis Male was keenly aware of the influence teachers have on children. She dreamed of transforming young lives the way her mother had.

“I have always loved little kids,” she said. “I feel that a teacher is such an influential person to children and that is something I want to be for them.”

With a career in teaching as her goal, Male sought a university with a high-quality elementary education program and a reputation for excellence. Radford University was an obvious choice – a decision that was validated in 2013 when the National Council on Teacher Quality rated it as one of only 13 universities in the country to have “multiple strong [education] programs.”

Upon graduation, Male’s future is already set, thanks to a Virginia Department of Education program called Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow .  The program seeks to identify, train and nurture high school students who are interested in a teaching career. Male participated in the program during her senior year in high school.

“I was offered an opportunity to learn more about the fundamentals of teaching and to participate in a brief internship in a real classroom setting,” she said. “Following that, I had to complete a portfolio highlighting my experience, which was ranked by real teachers with whom I had worked.”

The two students who received the highest marks on their portfolios were offered teaching contracts within the Virginia Beach school system upon graduation from college with a teaching license. Male was one of those two students.

Motivated by the prospect of a job waiting for her, she knows, however, that she needs to make the most of her time at Radford.

"Teaching is something that I have always been able to picture myself doing, but when I came to Radford my dream became a vision,” she said. “Thanks to Radford University’s great teaching program with its one-on-one support and outstanding faculty, I am given the support and motivation needed to become an amazing educator.”
