The question is what visually defines modern Appalachia. Is it the coal mines, the rural life of mountain towns, or thriving cities? The answer is found in a new photography exhibition coming to the Radford University Art Museum.
Senior music major Harold Bailey and freshman Hao Qin will perform later this year at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York. Both competed at the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition 2016 and won awards, which includes performing at one of the most famous recital halls in the world.
Four fashion design seniors sat at a long table in 211 McGuffey Hall. For the 48 hours starting Feb. 26, they worked in this space completing the Department of Design’s annual charrette.
Radford University had a large turnout of entrants and supporters at the American Advertising Federation awards ceremony presented at the Roanoke Market Square. Several graphic design students and the creative services team from University Relations received awards. Alumni prevailed, as well.
Alumnus Brandon Alford’s story of how Professor Rick Galyean influenced his life is worthy of a closer look. The story began years before Alford, who recently completed his master’s degree at Radford University, began his undergraduate years in Wise.
The Southwest Virginia Juried Student Photography Competition opened Feb. 19 to an audience of over 100 people. The exhibition at the Radford University Art Museum Downtown includes 52 photographic artworks by undergraduate students from 11 regional universities and colleges.
Virginia Opera presents “An Evening of Broadway and Opera” for its first appearance at Radford University at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 25.

The Department of Design is hosting a Fall Fashion Show that highlights the creative talents of Radford University students.
The Department of Criminal Justice, the School of Communication and the Department of Dance are featured in the media.
The Radford University Art Museum recognizes the artistic accomplishments of Radford University faculty and staff, with the latest exhibition that features artwork by Lee Coburn, director of Creative and Marketing Services in the Office of University Relations.
MFA student Langley Anderson held the first solo student exhibition in the newly-named Andrew W. Ross Student Gallery in McConnell Library.
Library staff recently dedicated a wall space, located in the rear of the third floor of the library, to honor Assistant Professor Andrew Ross, who has been instrumental in turning the quaint study area into a prominent place for students to display their artwork.
