The Department of Music is located in two adjacent buildings, the Douglas and Beatrice Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts, a state-of-the-art performing and rehearsal facility opened in January 2009, and the first floor of Porterfield Hall.
Radford University has been designated an “All Steinway School,” and our facilities are equipped with their finest pianos. These include the performance halls, applied studios, practice rooms, classrooms and rehearsal halls. The extraordinary 350-seat Performance Hall at the Douglas and Beatrice Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts, the department’s primary performance venue, houses two beautiful Steinway concert grand pianos. The Bondurant Auditorium in Preston Hall, another performance venue, is also equipped with a Steinway concert grand piano. All instruments are maintained regularly by licensed technicians year round.
The Covington Center includes the extraordinary 330-seat performance hall that features state-of-the-art adjustable acoustics to meet the needs ranging from solo performers, to choral ensembles, full symphonic band, orchestra, jazz ensemble or any artistic situation. Designed by acoustic architects Jaffe and Holden, it utilizes the same technology that was used in the renovation of Zankel Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Our performance hall also has a recording studio capable of reproducing the highest audio and video quality of performances.
There are also three spaces that mirror the acoustics of the performance hall; separate large instrumental and choral rehearsal rooms and a smaller chamber rehearsal hall - all multimedia equipped. The Covington Listening Center houses our music scores, with Mac computers for accessing our holdings, including all of our recordings in a digital format on our music library database, Opus X. This inviting room with a coffee house feel is the hub of activity for our music students with their laptops working on school projects, homework, study groups or a quiet place for study in a relaxing atmosphere. In addition, the music department office is located in Covington along with several faculty offices, practice rooms, lockers and a student lounge. The other side of the building features a spectacular lobby space and the Radford University Art Museum.
The music facilities next door in Porterfield Hall include five multimedia equipped classrooms, individual practice rooms with Steinway pianos and a twelve-station keyboard/computer lab. In addition, Preston Hall Bondurant Auditorium seats 1,500 for larger productions.
