Facilities

The Douglas and Beatrice Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts houses the Department of Music at Radford University.

The Department of Music is located in two adjacent buildings, the Douglas and Beatrice Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts, a state-of-the-art performing and rehearsal facility that opened in 2009, and the new Artis Center for Adaptive Innovation and Creativity. Some performances also occur in the Ken Bondurant Auditorium, a 1,500-seat auditorium where our 54 rank Mohler pipe organ is housed.

Radford University has been designated an “All Steinway School,” and our facilities are equipped with their finest pianos. These include the performance halls, applied studios, practice rooms, classrooms and rehearsal halls. The extraordinary 350-seat Performance Hall at the Douglas and Beatrice Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts, the department’s primary performance venue, houses two beautiful Steinway concert grand pianos. The Bondurant Auditorium in Preston Hall, another performance venue, is also equipped with a Steinway concert grand piano and a magnificent 54 rank Mohler pipe organ. All instruments are maintained regularly by licensed technicians year round.

The Covington Center includes the extraordinary 350-seat performance hall that features state-of-the-art adjustable acoustics to meet the needs ranging from solo performers, to choral ensembles, full symphonic band, orchestra, jazz ensemble or any artistic situation. Designed by acoustic architects Jaffe and Holden, it utilizes the same technology that was used in the renovation of Zankel Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Our performance hall also has a recording studio capable of reproducing the highest audio and video quality of performances.

There are also three spaces that mirror the acoustics of the performance hall; separate large instrumental and choral rehearsal rooms and a smaller chamber rehearsal hall - all multimedia equipped. Additionally,  several faculty offices,  Wegner and standard practice rooms, lockers and a student lounge. The other side of the building features the spectacular Scartelli Atrium and the Radford University Art Museum.

Additional new music facilities will become available in the Artis Center for Adaptive Innovation and Creativity in Fall of 2023. This state of the art complex will include new multimedia equipped classrooms, studios, performance & collaboration spaces and a new theater!
