Undergrad
You are considered a first-generation college student if neither of your parents or guardians earned a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a college or university in the United States before you turned 16 years old. This includes biological, adoptive, step, or other primary caregivers who played a significant role in your upbringing.
Graduate/Professional
You are considered a first-generation graduate student if you are the first in your family to pursue a graduate or professional degree—such as a master’s, doctorate (PhD, EdD, etc.), or professional degree (JD, MD, etc.). This applies even if your parents or guardians completed a bachelor’s degree. It includes biological, adoptive, step, or other primary caregivers who played a significant role in your upbringing.
