Transfer Students

Students who have earned an Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), or Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS) degree from a Virginia community college or higher education institution will have the following met: 

• REAL requirements (all 4 areas)
• Foundational Writing, Foundational Math, and Writing Intensive courses
• 30 credits required in General Education  

Students with an applied degree or without an approved degree can have their transfer credits evaluated in one of two ways: 

Course-by-Course Evaluation Model

A course-by-course evaluation of transfer credit will be conducted to determine which REAL requirements have been fulfilled. Students must fulfill the following requirements:

• 6 credits in Foundational Math and Writing;
• At least 9 credit hours in designated courses in all four R, E, A, and L areas; and
• 6 credits in writing intensive courses, one which must be at the 300-level or higher. 

As transfer students, Radford recognizes that it is important for you to understand exactly how your credits will transfer before arriving on campus. Please note: official transfer credit evaluations are done once official transcripts from all previous institutions are received.

Legacy Tiered Model
To support student success and acknowledge previous advising practices, we are allowing students to opt into Legacy Tiered Model during this transitional period if it is to their advantage.

Based on total approved transfer credit hours:

• 56+ credits: complete 9 hours in one REAL area, 3 hours in the other three (NOTE: Foundational and Writing Intensive requirements will be fulfilled at this level)
• 36–55 credits: complete 9 hours in two REAL areas, 3 hours in the other two
• 15–35 credits: complete 9 hours in three REAL areas, 3 hours in the remaining one
• 0–14 credits: complete all REAL requirements

Students with 55 or fewer credits must still complete the following if not transferred:

• At least 3 credits in R, E, and A
• Foundational Writing and Math
• 6 Writing Intensive credits (with 3 at the 300-level or higher)
