V. Course Description:
Focuses on normal growth and development, and evidenced based nursing interventions
appropriate for managing the acute and chronic care and the promotion of health for
children in a variety of settings.
VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:
The objectives and content of this Level 3 course facilitate achievement of the College’s
program outcomes as well as the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education (AACN). Additionally,
the major topics and skills covered in this course represent content covered on standardized
achievement examinations and the NCLEX-RN test plan. Current research, advanced nursing
theory, and evidence based clinical practice guide content development and course
design.
Topical Outline:
- Influences of family, culture, religion, and social policy on child health
- Implementation of evidenced-based nursing interventions as appropriate for managing
acute and chronic care and health promotion of children and the families in a variety
of environments.
- Normal growth and development, health promotion and common health concerns of children
during the following periods:
- Infancy
- Toddler
- Preschool
- School age
- Adolescence.
- Application of knowledge and patient care technology to deliver safe and quality care
to children experiencing acute and chronic health concerns in the following areas:
- Gastrointestinal
- Genitourinary
- Respiratory
- Cardiovascular
- Hematologic
- Immunologic
- Cerebral
- Endocrine
- Genetics
- Musculoskeletal
- Neuromuscular
- Integumentary
- Cognitive/sensory
- Psychosocial/child abuse

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:
The following teaching strategies will be employed but not limited to: Lectures, discussions,
multimedia, web-based activities, exemplars, and case studies.
VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Integrate the knowledge and methods of a variety of disciplines to make informed clinical
decisions when caring for children and their families.
- Implement evidenced-based nursing interventions as appropriate for managing the acute
and chronic care of children and for the promotion of health for children of all ages.
- Integrate evidenced-based research findings, clinical judgments, inter-professional
perspectives and child and family preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating
outcomes of care.
- Apply patient care technologies as appropriate to address the needs of a diverse population
of children.
- Utilize an ethical framework to evaluate the impact of social policies on the health
care of children and families.
- Contributes the unique nursing perspective to inter-professional teams to advocate
for safe and high-quality care to optimize outcomes for children and their families.
- Utilize scientific principles of nursing knowledge in increasingly complex situations
when providing multidimensional care to children and their families.
- Promote the image of nursing by modeling the values and articulating the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes of the nursing profession when caring for children and their
families.
- Conduct comprehensive and focused assessments of health and illness parameters in
children, using developmentally and culturally appropriate approaches.
- Integrate knowledge to identify, report, refer, and manage suspected child exploitation
or abuse.
