IV. Prerequisites: NURS 301, NURS 321, NURS 340, NURS 345, NURS 368.

V. Course Description:

Provides a comprehensive overview of the research process including problem statements; review of literature; methodology, design, sampling, and data collection; and interpretation and dissemination of findings. The course emphasizes knowledge and skills that are essential for critical evaluation of data-based publications and presentations.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

The objectives and content of this Level 2 course facilitate achievement of the College’s program outcomes as well as the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education (AACN). Additionally, the major topics and skills covered in this course represent content covered on standardized achievement examinations and the NCLEX-RN test plan. Current research, advanced nursing theory, and evidence based clinical practice guide content development and course design.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

 
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: 

  1. Discuss the influence of sociocultural factors in the research process. 
  2. Identify processes within healthcare systems that promote safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care. 
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of basic elements of the research process and models for applying evidence to clinical practice. 
  4. Identify the uses of information technologies and systems in translating data into evidence-based practice. 
  5. Identify legal and ethical issues arising in the research process in the context of professional nursing practice. 
  6. Discuss the role of nursing in translating research into practice to improve patient outcomes. 
  7. Apply principles of health promotion and disease prevention within the research process. 
  8. Use a patient-centered framework to guide the research process. 
  9. Demonstrate awareness of the importance of population diversity in building research evidence.
