MUSC 589. Field Work
Three hours lecture (1).

Prerequisite: Department approval.

This practicum course will be conducted in a variety of settings, both on and off campus, to prepare students for clinical practice with a variety of clients using music therapy techniques. This goal will be met through directly-supervised clinical experiences and supervision from a professional music therapist. Students will be required to obtain a total of 12 on-site clinical hours (one hour per week) in their first semester of Field Work. Students will increase their number of weekly clinical hours and level of clinical responsibility gradually over four semesters. 

 

Content

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

  • Student-led facilitation of group and/or individual music therapy sessions
  • Written and verbal feedback from supervising music therapist with the goal of further improving student facilitation quality, team collaboration, and documentation effectiveness
  • Written assignments designed to allow students to practice literature review, assessment, and treatment planning processes
  • Weekly documentation expectations related to sessions, including written session plans and progress notes

 

Student Learning Outcomes

Over the course of four semesters, Field Work students will be expected to gradually develop knowledge of clinical populations and relevant music therapy approaches. Students will learn to write professional-quality documentation related to client treatment. Students will practice professional interaction and effective collaboration with supervisor and fellow students within practicum group. Students will gradually progress from session observation responsibilities to independent session facilitation responsibilities as their clinical knowledge base and skills develop.

  • Supervisor assessment of quality and growth within relevant skill areas (i.e. team collaboration, co-facilitation quality, professionalism)
