MUSE 462: Student Teaching in Music, PK-12

Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Preparation Program
Internship in PreK-Grade 12 music classes in public schools. Clinical experience on
one or more grade levels appropriate to music certification in Virginia; begins with
observation and limited participation and culminates in assumption of full responsibility
in the classroom. Special seminars regularly scheduled to enhance the professional
development of the student.
Content
In this course students will attain the 300-hour requirement for VA licensure (150
hours direct teaching) in PreK-Grade 12 music, through a summative, supervised student
teaching experience in Pre-K through Grade 12 music. This internship will be under
the supervision of a cooperating teacher with demonstrated effectiveness in the classroom
in a public or accredited nonpublic school. Student teachers will be assigned a seven-week
placement in an elementary general music setting and a seven-week placement in a secondary
music setting to fulfill the licensure requirements.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The objectives for this course will be accomplished through the following:
- Readings
- Immersive teaching internships in both elementary general music (PreK-Grade 5) and
secondary music (Grades 6-12) in the candidate’s area of specialization (vocal/choral
or instrumental).

Goals and Objectives of the Course
In this course, students will:
- Develop and continue to refine conceptual knowledge and practical skills necessary
for presenting appropriate activities in the general music classroom
- planning skills and strategies—including long-term, curricular learning goals, sequential
learning objectives, daily lesson plans—and assessment strategies that will support
student learning in music as defined by local, state, and national standards
- skills and strategies for differentiating instruction for all learners in an inclusive
environment
- appropriate classroom management strategies, including crisis management
- knowledge and understanding of Virginia's Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards
and Evaluation Criteria for Teachers
- critical self-assessment and reflective capacities through ongoing reflective assignments,
recording observations, experiences, and thoughts regarding new or changing perspectives
about music education and oneself as an emerging music teacher.
