MUSE 358: Choral Literature and Materials

Prerequisites: Open to Music Education students

Co-requisites: MUSE 300 or MUSE 400: Field Experiences in Music Education

Credit Hours: (2) two hours lecture/one hour laboratory

Survey of choral music literature for K-12 school and community choral programs.

    1. VA State graded lists and other published lists of literature for assessment
    2. Choral public domain websites
    3. Publisher catalogs
    4. Professional journal reviews
    5. Reading sessions, workshops, clinics, and conferences
    6. Recommendations of colleagues
    7. Concert programs
  3. Choral music as curriculum
    1. Selecting repertoire based on learning objectives
    2. Teaching foreign languages using the International Phonetic Alphabet
    3. Copyright law
    4. Use of technology
    5. Concert programming including collaboration with the fine arts department in your school

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The objectives of the course will be accomplished through reading and listening assignments, discussion, lecture, written papers, score analysis, projects, students’ presentations, construction of a database of choral music literature, exams, and peer teaching exercises.

 

Student Learning Outcomes 

 

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of choral genres and styles
  2. identify appropriate repertoire and discern implications of repertoire-as-curriculum
  3. demonstrate how to locate appropriate choral music for curriculum
  4. demonstrate appropriate diction for teaching utilizing the International Phonetic Alphabet
  5. develop a one–year choral curriculum for both a middle school and a high school choir

 

Assessment Measures

Grades will be based on writing assignments, curriculum project, and conducting-teaching demonstrations.
