MUSE 353: Classroom Instruments

Two hours laboratory (1). 

Prerequisites: MUSC 115, MUSC 162, MUSC 368

Classroom Instruments involves the study of instruments commonly used in general music classes, including the voice as an instrument. The course includes performance techniques, pedagogy for teaching young students how to use the singing voice and perform classroom instruments effectively, and basic accompaniment and arranging techniques for classroom ensembles. Students will address state and national standards through classroom instrument instruction.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course provides performance experiences on classroom instruments, beginning with appropriate use of the vocal instrument (singing voice) and progressing to unpitched percussion, pitched percussion, and recorder. Performance of repertoire for classroom ensembles is included and basic instrument construction and techniques of arranging for classroom ensembles are practiced. It also includes practice teaching opportunities using accompaniment instruments (piano, guitar/ukulele). Students engage in lesson planning, delivering, and reflecting on activities that center around performing classroom instruments in a peer-teaching environment.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course, the student will 

1. Develop a working notebook of teaching, repertoire, and reference resources
2. Develop and demonstrate competence in singing and performing classroom instruments
3. Develop and demonstrate ability to play basic song accompaniments using piano and guitar/ukulele
4. Develop and demonstrate understanding of basic instrument construction and maintenance
5. Develop and demonstrate instructional skills in:
   1. Planning appropriate, active, and engaging classroom instrument instruction in EG classes
      1. methodology and teaching techniques
      2. classroom management strategies for classroom instruments
      3. instrumental tonal pattern and rhythm pattern development
      4. differentiated instruction for children with special needs
      5. arranging and composing for classroom instruments
   2. Delivering classroom instrument music instruction effectively
   3. Assessing students’ learning based on state and national standards of learning
6. Develop the foundations of professional teaching habits, attitudes, and dispositions, including: 
   1. punctual and regular attendance in class
   2. thorough preparation for class activities and peer teaching episodes
   3. active participation in class activities, discussions, and group work          
   4. completion of assigned written work competently* and on time.
