MUSE 117: Technology in the Music Classroom

Prerequisites: Declared concentration in Music Education.

Credit Hours: (1)

In order to successfully integrate technology into their teaching, music education majors will develop critical and applicable awareness of instructional and music technologies. Prospective music teachers will be introduced to techniques and methods in a wide array of technologies, as well as national music (NCAS) and technology (ISTE) standards via Project-Based Learning (PBL). Along the way, students will develop basic skills for identifying and applying technologies appropriate to PK-12 music classrooms and programs.

 

Content

  1. International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) student and educator standards, as well as National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) for music.
  2. Practical classroom realities of technology integration.
  3. Google for Education (Apps, Classroom).
  4. Microsoft Office for Music Educators.
  5. Music Notation App Basics.
  6. Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Basics.
  7. Sound Recording and Reinforcement (microphones, amplification, equipment).
  8. Available web technologies for use in the music classroom.
  9. Technology-Based Music Instruction (TMBI) lesson design.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course stresses hands-on experience with a variety of technologies found in Music classrooms across the Commonwealth of Virginia and models basic methods for integrating such technology into the Music classroom and Music Program. The students create a series of technology mini-projects. This course utilizes a combination of online instruction with both written and video directions and examples in order to understand the strengths, limits, and varied application of current technologies for music education. This course emphasizes practical applications of available technologies to meet the needs of diverse learners in a variety of music education settings.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will identify practical classroom realities of technology integration.
  2. Students will demonstrate ability to maneuver in and create simple works in Google Apps and Google Classroom.
  3. Students will demonstrate ability to maneuver in and create simple works in Microsoft Office.
  4. Students will demonstrate ability to maneuver in and create simple works in music notation applications.
  5. Students will demonstrate ability to maneuver in and create simple works in Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs).
  6. Students will demonstrate ability to apply basic and appropriate sound recording and reinforcement (microphones, amplification, equipment).
  7. Students will apply knowledge of online tools to enhance instruction.
  8. Students will understand how ISTE and NCAS standards may be combined with  TBMI-lesson design.

 

Assessment Measures

  1. Weekly (unit) activities via PBL-format.
  2. Final technology evaluation virtual notebook.
