Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
MLAB421C is a clinical course that provides students with the opportunity to work side by side with certified medical laboratory scientists to apply their acquired knowledge in a fast paced, high volume clinical laboratory. Students will acquire practical skills and achieve entry level competency in main clinical laboratory areas.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will apply knowledge acquired in pre and co-requisite didactic courses to real world situations and clinical testing of patient samples. Entry level competency in achieved laboratory skills will be assessed and documented by clinical staff. Students are also assessed on affective behaviors while in the professional environment.
Students are provided the opportunity to discuss, observe, and perform laboratory testing in both real and simulated environments and implement knowledge acquired in pre and co-requisite courses. Students will recognize and experience their role in the healthcare team via interaction with other clinical staff in the pre and post-analytical phases of testing. Student professionalism and communication are assessed with affective behavior competencies.
Assessment Measures
Entry level competency in achieved laboratory skills will be assessed and documented by clinical staff. Skills checklist in both technical and affective behaviors are completed for each rotation by clinical staff and submitted to program faculty.
