MGNT 440: Project and Event Management  

Credit Hours: (3)

Provides both technical and behavioral management skills for projects and the experience-based sub-category of projects called “events.” The content deals with planning, scheduling, organizing, implementing, and controlling projects using software tools, project management methods, and team leadership behavior.  Significant class emphasis is placed on the project management process applied to a semester-long event/project plan and implementation.

Detailed Description of Course

This course introduces students to the formal project management process.  Topics to be covered in the course include scope management, HR management, budget management, risk management, time-schedule management, communication management, stakeholder management, and procurement management.

Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

In addition to a complete review of the fundamental project management framework students will also: 

  • Attend a campus event and critique the event using PM best practices
  • select a personally significant event and build a complete PM plan around that event using the tools of the course
  • review scenes from the movie Oceans 11 and critique the processes used, comparing them to PM best practices
  • review multiple current event case students to help them employ PM practices


Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

  • Apply knowledge and skills to develop a professional project 
  • Critically evaluate a large-scale project from multiple perspectives 
  • Identify basic PM best practices
  • Demonstrate understanding of the PM Certification process
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the project management principles and methodologies needed for industry-recognized certifications.  
  • Apply the PM framework and process to a selected project
  • Integrate a variety of different PM strategies


Assessment Measures

Embedded course measures - quizzes, exams, presentations, and projects. Students will have the option to take a PM certification exam.
