DSNI 415: Studio: Health + Wellness II

Prerequisite: C or better in DSNI410

Credit Hours: (3) Six hour studio.

A continuation of DSNI410, a comprehensive study of the design process as applied to commercial environments focused on wellness. Problem solving skills are employed in the design of wellness and health spaces to accommodate the user's needs.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Building on DSNI410, students develop problem-solving competencies in designing commercial interiors with an emphasis on wellness. Students apply schematic design, design development, and construction drawings in developing interior design solutions that accommodate physiological, sociological, psychological, and environmental needs for the intended client. Students explore alternative solutions and develop concepts through various visualization techniques. 

Topics to include: 

  • Design process (blocking, space planning, ideation drawings, perspectives, digital boards) 
  • Space planning 
  • Codes and Sustainability Standards (emphasis on WELL Building Standards and LEED) 
  • Wayfinding 
  • Color 
  • Lighting 
  • Construction Drawings and Specifications 
  • FF&E 
  • Accessibility and Universal Design 
  • Application of Evidence-based Design and Theory

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:  

  1. Explore design approaches to a range of health and wellness spaces including live-in and outpatient healthcare spaces, wellness practice and retail spaces, and health services settings. 
  2. Apply theories and evidence related to the impact of the built environment on human experience, behavior, and performance.
  3. Explore the relationship between the designed environment and human experience, wellbeing, behavior, and performance to inform design solutions.
  4. Execute the design process of pre-design, schematic design, and design development with the ability to explore and iterate multiple ideas.
  5. Create complete orthographic drawings and plans to reflect the human relationship to the built environment in the context of sustainability, health, and wellness through research-informed design solutions.
  6. Apply construction details, building codes, lighting, and mechanical systems to research-informed design solutions.
  7. Apply human factor considerations (i.e., circulation and flow, egress, wayfinding, zones, standard measurements, ergonomics, spatial relationships, tasks, etc.) to research-informed interior design solutions.
  8. Apply federal, state/provincial, and local codes including occupancy group and load calculations, movement, travel distance, means of egress, barrier-free, and accessibility regulations and guidelines to research-informed interior design solutions 
  9. Apply human wellbeing health, and safety regulations and guidelines and environmental impact considerations (e.g. acoustics, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, waste management strategies, impact of the selection and application of products and systems) in research-informed interior design solutions 
  10. Apply light, color, finished, materials, furnishings, and objects to work together to support the design intent and purpose with justification in creative and effective design solutions 
  11. Specify, with appropriate rationale, furniture, fixtures, and equipment, furnishings, and accessories appropriate to the interior typology, use, and purpose 
  12. Produce visual and verbal presentations to communicate interior design solutions using data and research

In addition to the learning outcomes stated above, Interior Design studios will comply with the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) learning outcome standards pertaining to “Design Process,” “Communication,” “Collaboration,” “Human-Centered Design,” “Building Systems and Human Wellbeing,” “Construction,” “Products and Materials,” and “Regulations and Guidelines.” The map of those standards as they relate to the above listed may be furnished upon request.
