DSNI 407: Senior Show and Portfolio
Credit Hours: (3) Six hours Studio.
An interior design studio focusing on body of work iteration, collaborative practice,
business entities, and professional methodologies.
Note(s): Students cannot receive credit for both DSNI 407 and DSNI 492.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
An interior design studio focusing on experiential design with an emphasis on body
of work iteration, collaborative practice, business entities, and professional methodologies.
Major Topics to include:
- BFA Capstone Design Elements
- Investigate a challenging problem or question in an authentic context
- Develop ideas or solutions through sustained inquiry
- Evaluate structured critique or data and use feed back to revise and improve work
- Present a public product showcasing key learnings
- Juried Exhibition
- Select and assess previous independent and collaborative coursework
- Propose plans for capstone exhibition inclusion
- Refine coursework
- Develop graphic presentation within the prescribed uniform class showcase format
- Iterative process: refine, critique, refine
- Exhibition display set up
- Exhibition reception
- Exhibition display take down
- Final portfolio package
- Select and assess previous independent and collaborative work
- Refine coursework
- Further develop a consistent graphic presentation format for the package: to include
letterhead, resume, portfolio teaser, and portfolio
- Iterative process: refine, critique, refine
- Submission: print and digital - this may be housed in the degree exit requirements
- Design Charrette experience

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Instructional strategies to include:
lecture, in-class discussions, one-on-one critiques, iterative studio work, use of
audio-visual materials, collaborative activity, and presentations.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Apply problem-solving methods to idea generating to articulate collaborative design
ideas
- Communicate design work to demonstrate body of work skillset competency
- Develop conceptual ideation pursuant of creativity, innovation, and risk taking
- Evaluate design solutions for strengths and weaknesses to apply an iterative process
through further refinement, edits, and critique of a body of work
- Showcase works, from the BFA degree, in a variety of formats for a variety of audiences
- Address the components of business and professional practice
- Address professional ethics and conduct, including diversity, equity, and inclusion,
in workplace practices
In addition to the learning outcomes identified above, outcomes pertinent to the Council
for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) standards related to "Global Context," "Collaboration,"
"Business Practice and Professionalism," "Design Process," "Communication," and others
will be listed in the course syllabus. Those learning outcomes may be furnished upon
request.
Assessment Measures
Projects, Assignments, Exercises, Iterative work (check points, critiques, and revisions),
self-evaluations, and presentations in written, oral, and graphic formats, and Juried
exhibition.
