DSNI 351: History of Interior Design and Architecture

An introduction to historically significant architecture, interiors, architectural details, decorative arts, furnishings, motifs, and finishes as modes of expression within their cultural and physical contexts.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Addressing antiquity to contemporary historically significant architecture, interiors, architectural details, decorative arts, furnishings, motifs, and finishes as modes of expression within their cultural and physical contexts. 

Course content and major topics to include: 

1. Historical periods, styles, or movements in architecture and interior design from antiquity to contemporary, including:  
   
   1. Significant architecture, interiors, architectural details, decorative arts, furnishings, motifs, and finishes
   2. Prominent Interior Designers and Architects 
   3. Cultural context (i.e., social, cultural, political, diversity, and socio-economic influences) 
   4. Physical context (i.e., geographic location, environmental conditions, resources, and technological influences)  
2. Historic preservation concepts, including: 
   
   1. Interdisciplinary approach to preservation concepts
   2. Preservation standards and guidelines for historic structures

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Instructional strategies to include:

• Audio-visual materials
• Lecture
• Writing-to-learn activities

 

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. recognize major historical periods, styles, or movements in architecture and interior design
2. identify significant architectural details, decorative arts, furnishings, motifs, and finishes from major historical periods, styles, or movements in architecture and interior design
3. associate prominent interior designers and architects with their signature styles
4. examine the cultural context (i.e., social, cultural, political, diversity, and socio-economic influences) in which the historic period, style, or movement developed
5. examine the physical context (i.e., geographic location, environmental conditions, resources, and technologies) in which the historic period, style, or movement developed
6. analyze how interior design and architecture have evolved over time
7. compare historical periods, styles, and movement to current societal dialogue in overarching terms of value, use, impact, and influence

In addition to the student learning outcomes listed above, learning outcomes pertinent to the program's Council on Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) standards related to Global Context" and "History" will be applied to this course. A listing of those standards will be provided upon request. 

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment strategies will include: 

• a minimum of two exams
• a minimum of four assignments (i.e., identification and analysis of historical period and/or style in furniture and/or furnishings, written interpretation and reflection  related to historical periods, styles, and/or movements and contemporary design practice, etc.)
• a minimum of one project requiring research (i.e., findings, definitions, comparative, cause and effect, analysis, interpretations, etc.) component or element (i.e., paper, research poster, infographic, booklet, etc.)
• a minimum of one collaborative activity assignment
