DSNI 225: Communication Technology

Prerequisite: C or better in DSNI125; or permission of instructor.

Credit Hours: (3) Two hours lecture/Two hours lab.

Lecture/Lab format focusing on computer-aided design skills and techniques for producing construction documents, three-dimensional modeling, rendering, and animation. 

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Lecture/Lab format focusing on computer-aided design skills and techniques for producing construction documents, three-dimensional modeling, rendering, and animation. 

Topics to include: 

  1. Construction document generation 
  2. Computer skills for interior modeling 
    1. Modeling interiors spaces 
    2. Modeling custom items 
  3. Computer rendering and lighting techniques 
  4. Animated walk-throughs 
  5. Familiarization with virtual reality simulation generation 

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Instructional strategies to include:

Each hour of lecture is to be followed by an hour of lab time. 

Begin with small exercises reinforced with quizzes to build skills. 

As skills grow, incorporate project application(s) of learned techniques.

  • Walk-thru processes 
  • Experiment with VR (when equipment is provided)

  • Minimum of one project containing construction documents 
  • Minimum of one project containing custom design feature and detailing 
  • Minimum one project with interior renderings & lighting 

 

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:  

  1. Utilize architectural modeling software for drafting, detailing, and documenting information.  
  2. Create architectural drawings, details, and documents according to standard drafting conventions using digital methods.   
  3. Produce architectural drawings, details, and documents according to project parameters and design principles using digital methods.  
  4. Generate high-quality digital renderings of visualized conceptual interior spaces.  
  5. Explore processes for simulated walk-throughs and virtual reality. 

In addition the the learning outcomes identified above, this course will follow standards set by the Council on Interior Design Accreditation, including "Communication." Particulars of the CIDA standards may be furnished upon request.
