DSNI 210: Space Planning + Human Factors
Prerequisite: C or better in DSNI120, DSNI125
Credit Hours: (3) Six hours studio
An interior design studio exploration of space planning and human factors with an
emphasis on design process and problem solving.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
An interior design studio exploration of space planning and human factors with an
emphasis on design process and problem solving. A studio application of the interior
design process for space planning with special attention given to human factors. Building
on previous technical skills, this course further incorporates graphic communications,
spatial organization, and problem-solving skills to design solutions that interpret
requirement and preference while accommodating users on an increasingly complex scale.
Topics to include:
- Human Factors
- Anthropometrics
- Ergonomics
- Accessibility & ADA
- Universal Design & inclusive design
- Proxemics
- Wayfinding
- Environmental context
- Space Planning Design Process
- Research
- Programing
- Analysis: Prototypes, Site analysis
- Schematic Ideation and Iterations: Adjacencies, Block diagrams, Interior sketches,
Massing and circulation
- Preliminary space planning
- Redlines and Revisions process and iterations
- Environmental context for interiors on humans

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Instructional strategies to include:
- Lessons that are followed by class studio time that builds on aspects of the lesson.
- Activities and exercises, some with experiential aspects, hands on learning
- Series of space planning projects that grow in scale with a diversity of project types
(8b, 8j)
- Iterative process with peer and instructional critique
- Student presentations with graphic and oral communication activities
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- understand and apply the phases of the interior design space planning process in evolving
project scales and types. (8a, 8b, 8j)
- ability to synthesize information and generate multiple concepts and/or multiple design
responses to programmatic requirements. (8f)
- interpret requirements and preferences for interior design solutions with both functional
and aesthetic considerations (8c, 8g)
- address the sociological and physiological accommodations and needs of the end-users
in interior design solutions (7e)
- develop plans to reflect the human relationship to the built environment, creating
appropriate spatial organization in interior design solutions (4c, 14a)
- integrate spatial organization and furniture layout conventions with applicable codes
and standards including universal design principles and ADA (16g, 16h, 16i).
- Effectively communicate ideas in written, oral and visual formats, including preliminary
sketching. (9c, 9d, 9e)
Learning outcomes for this course are supplemented by the Council on Interior Design
Accreditation standards which are listed by number/letter code at the end of each
outcome above. Those standards may be furnished upon request to supplement this course
proposal.
