DSNI 125: Design Drawing

Credit Hours: (3) Six hours studio

An introduction to drawing and drafting using architectural conventions with both hand-drawn and computer techniques while exposing students to small-scale space planning strategies and building construction components. 


Detailed Description of Course

An introduction to drawing and drafting using architectural conventions with both hand-drawn and computer techniques while exposing students to small-scale space planning strategies and building construction components. 

Topics to include: 

  1. Drawing skills:
    1. Drafting tools 
    2. Lines: types, weight, quality 
    3. Scale 
    4. Sketching & freehand drafting: Orthographic drawings to scale, Axonometric sketching  
  2. Drafting Conventions 
    1. Architectural graphic standards 
    2. Orthographic drawings: plans, elevations, & sections 
    3. Dimensioning 
    4. Cross referencing communication  
    5. Schedules 
    6. Construction document organization 
  3. CAD  
    1. Software skills  
    2. Drafting of interior spaces & components – orthographic drawings 
    3. Accurately scaled printing/plots 
    4. Best practices for CAD 
  4. Introductory space planning & design (small scale) 
    1. Room scale prototypes 
    2. Designing in elevation 
    3. Sheet layout, design and formats 
    4. Reinforce the principles and elements of design 
  5. Introduction to building construction/components (understanding level) 
    1. Building systems overview: Framing basics, Electrical layout basics, Window and door types 
    2. Introduction to residential codes: Residential bathrooms, Circulation widths, Egress windows, Smoke detectors, Electrical basics 


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Instructional strategies to include: Lessons that are followed by class studio time that builds on aspects of the lesson.  Include repetitive practice activities for skills building. Begin with smaller exercises followed by small projects.  Checkpoints keep students on track.  Ideation, design, and drawing phases begin on paper strengthening hand drawing skills.  Then students take their drawings to the computer and reinforce those skills.   The final project to be suitable for portfolio work. 


Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:  

  1. develop architectural sketching skills. (9d)
  2. translate three-dimensional space using two-dimensional orthographic drawings.(9d) 
  3. interpret construction drawings and documents including architectural standards, symbols, purpose, and implementation. (15i) 
  4. experiment with small-scale interior problems and graphically propose solutions. (9e) 
  5. demonstrate competency in operating computer-aided design software and two-dimensional graphics. (9e, 9f) 
  6. apply architectural drafting skills to create a construction document package. (15j*) 
  7. identify basic building construction components. (15b)

    • An understanding architectural math conversions
