HSCI 871 - Capstone II

Instructional Method: Three hours lecture.

Prerequisites: Completion of a minimum of 24 credits in the program, HSCI 715, HSCI 716, HSCI 870

This course is a continuation of student work initiated in HSCI 870 and is the second of a three-part capstone series. Building on the foundation established in Capstone I, this course will focus on guiding students in the implementation of an applied scholarly capstone project. Preliminary analysis of quantitative and qualitative data will also be included.

Note(s): This is a pass/fail course.

 

Content

In this course, students will finalize their project methodology and begin project implementation to include the systematic collection of data. Topics to be covered include: 

  • IRB submission and ethical research practices and documentation. 
  • Best practices for collecting and organizing qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Preliminary data analysis and interpretation
  • Utilizing SPSS for descriptive and inferential data analysis
  • Writing clear, concise, and evidence-based results
  • Constructing the methodology and results sections for a manuscript
  • Peer-reviewed poster and oral presentations

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Instructional strategies in this course will include developing written materials related to capstone project, oral and written communication activities, self-paced learning through online modules, and guest speakers. 

 

Student Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this course, students will be able to:

  1. Design an applied scholarly project that effectively addresses a complex problem within the health sciences using appropriate methodologies, and consideration of ethical implications.
  2. Implement an evidence-based project that addresses a complex problem within the health sciences utilizing appropriate methodologies and ethical considerations. 
  3. Construct an Institution Review Board (IRB) application that addresses ethical and regulatory requirements for studies involving human subjects. 
  4. Understand how to evaluate and apply appropriate quantitative and qualitative methodologies to conduct preliminary data analysis.

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment strategies in this course will include formative, summative, reflective, peer-review, faculty feedback, and real-world assessment methods. Rubrics will be incorporated for assessment of written assignments. 

 

Other Course Information

During this course, capstone students will be working closely with their capstone committee (i.e. faculty advisor and faculty mentor) on implementation of their project. A guest speaker(s) will be brought in to provide information and training on analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.
