- Muscle activation and electromyographic analysis
- Muscle length-tension relationships
- Open and closed kinematic chain
- Postural analysis
- Postural abnormalities
- Walking and running gait analysis
- Gait abnormalities
- Impact of faulty alignment on anatomical structures.
- Functional movement analysis
- Movement abnormalities in activities of daily living and exercises
- Critical reflection on the ability to analyze gate, posture, and functional movement in future clients
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students will be instructed in a variety of situations including lectures, problem solving sessions, palpation, and evaluation experiences. Students work individually and in groups to learn skills and practice postural analysis, gait analysis and functional movement analysis.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Define nomenclature related to the analysis of muscular movement.
- Describe the arthrokinetics of motion in various joints throughout the body.
- Describe the structural and functional characteristics of the muscular system.
- Describe basic movement analysis terms and principles and apply them to human movement patterns.
- Evaluate standing and sitting posture.
- Identify standing and sitting postural abnormalities.
- Evaluate the impact of improper postural alignment on muscle activation.
- Identify muscle activation patterns in electromyographic samples.
- Evaluate walking and running gait.
- Identify gait abnormalities.
- Analyze potential muscular and joint impacts based on improper gait mechanics.
- Evaluate activities of daily living and exercise movement patterns.
- Identify movement abnormalities in selected activities of daily living and exercises.
- Critically reflect on their level of confidence in their ability to analyze gate, posture, and functional movement in future clients
Assessment Measures
Assessment measures may include, but are not limited to:
- Written examination
- Practical examination
- Video assignments
- Group projects
Other Course Information
The course is designed to teach the students how to identify and analyze the anatomical foundations of human motion and underlying principles of basic motor skills. The course includes a study of fundamental movement concepts, structure and function of joints, the muscular system and neuromuscular function as related to movement. Skilled movement analysis topics such as postural analysis, gait analysis and functional movement analysis are primary concepts addressed in the course.
